I’m coming up on my two-year Nome-iversary on August 29th. The first year I lived in Nome, many people back in my hometown of Palmer, Alaska would ask me about life here. I got questions about the grocery stores, native cultures, landscape and gold mining. It was fun to discuss things like that, as it was such a novelty. I had never thought I would move to even more rural Alaska than Palmer, so I understood the surprise and curiosity of others.
But this second year in Nome, the questions and conversations changed. This summer I was back visiting for my brother’s wedding, and I noticed a new trend. Friends and family asked alike, “How long do you think you’ll stay there?”

How long will I stay? My answer is usually, “I’m here until I’m not.” I came to Nome for a job, and I stayed for the people. The community is tight-knit, diverse, welcoming and supportive. I hope you catch a taste of the #NomeLife through the slideshow above. If not, you’re welcome to see it for yourself in real time – I’ve got a guest bedroom with a rather comfy air mattress open for visitors!
